In 1967, in Canton, Ohio, Macy Gray was born as Natalie McIntyre. When Gray was young, her father, Otis Jones, abandoned the family. In addition to her brother, she also has a sister.
Gray started taking piano lessons at the tender age of seven. Later, when she was a teenager, she went to several different high schools, and at least one of them expelled her for misbehaviour.
Canton South High School alumna Gray went on to study screenwriting at USC after graduation in 1985.

Initiation into a Profession Career:
When Beverly Hills cashier Macy Gray met songwriter and record producer Joe Solo, the two began collaborating on music. The resulting demo tape helped Gray get gigs singing in jazz clubs in Los Angeles.
After that, Atlantic Records signed her, only to drop her when the executive who had signed her departed the label. The senior vice president of the Los Angeles-based Zomba Label Group visited her in Ohio in 1997 and persuaded her to resume her music career.
She got a development deal and started writing and recording songs about her life. She signed with Epic Records in 1998.
Various Musical Hits, Including “On How Life Is”
Gray’s first studio album, titled “On How Life Is,” was released in the summer of 1999. A worldwide success, it spawned the smash singles “Do Something,” “Still,” and “Why Didn’t You Call Me.”
It was “I Try” that did the best, becoming a massive hit that year. As a result of its popularity, “On How Life Is” was certified three times platinum in the United States and four times platinum in the United Kingdom.
After that, “I Try” won Best Female Pop Vocal Performance at the Grammys and was nominated for Song of the Year and Record of the Year. Gray’s second studio album, “The Id,” which followed her success, peaked at number eleven on the Billboard 200.
In the UK, it performed much better, quickly rising to the top of the UK Albums Cart and being certified gold. Gray came back after a four-year break to deliver her fourth studio album, “Big,” which included the hits “Finally Made Me Happy” and “Shoo Be Doo.” The album, which featured guest appearances from Justin Timberlake, Fergie, and Natalie Cole, was another critical hit for Gray.
Gray’s follow-up album, “The Sellout,” featured the single “Beauty in the World,” which was featured in the season finale of the ABC comedy “Ugly Betty.”
Gray began working on her follow-up album, a collection of cover versions of her previous singles, in 2011, after signing with 429 Records. 2016 brought us “Stripped,” also from Chesky Records. The album “Stripped” debuted at #3 on the Billboard Jazz Chart to widespread critical praise.

Gray was married to mortgage broker Tracy Hinds for about four years before divorcing at a crucial time in her career. Mel, Aanisah, and Happy were their three children from their union.
Gray listed her massive San Fernando Valley mansion for sale for for $4.5 million in 2006. The Colonial-style mansion measured 10,000 square feet and included seven bedrooms, nine and a half baths, a jacuzzi, a swimming pool, and a basketball court.
